Art Deco Armoire

Art Deco Maple Wardrobe / Armoire - $300 (Falls Church)

Here is a nice looking Art Deco armoire with green bakelite / plastic handles. This is a beautiful and very deco piece with a tall vertical build and stepped top. It is made of solid maple, and has a convenient combination of interior shelves, rods, and drawers that make it very functional, yet has a clean facade.

This would be a very useful and yet attractive piece of furniture if you have limited closet / storage space and are looking to expand. The seller is also selling an identical, larger wardrobe (http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/fuo/1044929921.html) .

Art Deco Bedroom Set

Vintage 1940s Bedroom Furniture - $599 (Arlington)

This listing is for a classic 1940s Art Deco bedroom set consisting of a full size bed frame, vanity with mirror, and a dresser with mirror. This is a beautiful, richly colored set that appears to be in good condition (as also stated by the seller).

The price is a little higher than what I would want to pay, but certainly there is room for negotiation in there. Overall a nice set for those of you who love the Art Deco style.

Unique Art Deco Desk / Cabinet

Antique Writing Desk, Art Deco, Good Condition - $200 obo (Gainesville, VA)

This unique-looking Art Deco writing desk / cabinet / hutch is being offered for $200 (or best offer) and according to the seller is in "good condition" with "some scratches and chips on veneer". The listing is sparing and the photo is low quality making it a bit difficult to determine anything about this piece of furniture, its condition, or whether the price is reasonable. However, I can see that this desk / cabinet has a very nice set of vertical lines, a functional set of slots, cabinets, and drawers, and a combination of veneers including what looks like a burl on the upper cabinets and a wide wood grain on the lower drawers.

If you are interested in this period and style of furniture this is certainly worth a call to the seller for more information, or even a visit to see the piece. If it is in good condition, $200 may end up being a pretty good deal.

Aluminum table lamps

This posting from earlier in the week is for a pair of what look like brushed aluminum table lamps. They have a funky, narrow oval shape and come with the original, unique shades in the same shape. Although I have no idea of their age, the lamps have a very machine-age style that would complement either art deco or mid century decor. At $30 for the pair, you really can't go wrong.

Art Deco dining set

8 Piece Waterfall DECO Dining Set - $900 (NW)

This Art Deco waterfall style dining set includes a table and 5 chairs, a buffet / credenza, and a china cabinet. Although this style is not for everyone, I am a fan, and this set is very representative of this era - early to mid 1900s.

These pieces are veneer, and therefore complicated to restore, so it is important to inspect their condition to know the true value. Overall, $900 for a dining set is a good deal; however, the set does seem to be missing one armchair (includes just 5 chairs). Also note that the seller says the price is negotiable, and he/she will sell pieces individually, which could be a good thing depending on your need.

Overall a nice set for those of you who enjoy Art Deco furniture in this style.

Swing-arm lamps

A popular art deco / mid century lamp, these Nessen swing-arms seem to have held up pretty well over time.  The brass looks a bit tarnished but these generally polish up quickly and beautifully with a little Brasso and steel wool.  The shades seem fairly clean and the owner describes them as "excellent".  The only downside is that the lamps seem to be missing the perforated circular metal piece that generally went above the light bulbs, attached by the finial, although I am not sure if that feature was actually included in all productions of the lamp.  One of these is currently for sale on eBay, with bidding starting at $80 and an estimated sale price of $150-200.

This is also a piece of design history: Walter von Nessen invented the swing-arm feature for lamps in 1927 and this desk lamp was his first design to incorporate that feature. It is still made today by Nessen Lighting, and new ones sell for over $400 a piece.

Bottom line - $75 is a good buy for these classic lamps, and with a little clean-up they will easily be worth more! (It is worth asking the seller, or checking if there is a Nessen label anywhere on the piece)
