Arco Style Floor Lamp

George Kovacs Polished Chrome Arc Floor Lamp - $150 (Silver Spring / Kensington)

Here is an imitation of the famous Arco Lamp designed by Achille and Pierre Giacomo Castiglioni. There are many imitations of this lamp, and although this one is not an exact copy, it is fairly close in appearance (with the exception of the base) and is certainly a high quality reproduction. This one is "by" George Kovacs and produced by Minka. It is coated in polished chrome throughout, and has a white marble base. A new one like this can be bought for around $350, and other similar reproductions and variations are out there (see CB2 for example). You can also still buy new licensed originals for $2,300 and up.

Overall, if you like the style of this piece and are not looking to shell out $2300 for an original, this is a great bet. Price is $150, which seems pretty reasonable overall. This would be a fantastic addition to your modern living room or study.

Aluminum table lamps

Two table lamps - $30 (Capitol Hill)

This posting from earlier in the week is for a pair of what look like brushed aluminum table lamps. They have a funky, narrow oval shape and come with the original, unique shades in the same shape. Although I have no idea of their age, the lamps have a very machine-age style that would complement either art deco or mid century decor. At $30 for the pair, you really can't go wrong.

This red glass lamp is not amazing, but it's a fairly nice piece and would look pretty good in the right setting.  Decent price too!

Swing-arm lamps

Pair vintage Nessen swing arm lamps - $75 (Frederick)

A popular art deco / mid century lamp, these Nessen swing-arms seem to have held up pretty well over time.  The brass looks a bit tarnished but these generally polish up quickly and beautifully with a little Brasso and steel wool.  The shades seem fairly clean and the owner describes them as "excellent".  The only downside is that the lamps seem to be missing the perforated circular metal piece that generally went above the light bulbs, attached by the finial, although I am not sure if that feature was actually included in all productions of the lamp.  One of these is currently for sale on eBay, with bidding starting at $80 and an estimated sale price of $150-200. 

This is also a piece of design history: Walter von Nessen invented the swing-arm feature for lamps in 1927 and this desk lamp was his first design to incorporate that feature. It is still made today by Nessen Lighting, and new ones sell for over $400 a piece.

Bottom line - $75 is a good buy for these classic lamps, and with a little clean-up they will easily be worth more! (It is worth asking the seller, or checking if there is a Nessen label anywhere on the piece)
